policy, are always open for feedback and willing to have that conversation with
you. They even appreciate it and seek it, which is rare. CFP is the best company
I have ever worked for. You never know where a good idea is going to come from. Before I was at HCC, I was a butcher for 10 years, where employers did not appreciate employee value. CFP is an employee- owned firm, which helps with the community building. Folks have more skin in the game to work together and make the company successful, and everyone shares the success.
Q: What was your original reason for joining the NCFA?
A: When I got hired, my boss offered for CFP to pay dues to join the NCFA.
They want us all to be ProLogger certified, so the firm drove the decision for me.
Q: Tell me about your organization.
A: CFP was founded in 1957. It’s a hardwood and plywood manufacturer
creating cabinets and high-end plywood uses. At the mill in Old Fort, we peel
the inner ply and bring in the front/back veneer facing from one of the veneer mills or exotic wood sources. Everything is made to order and custom for customers. We sell Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified panels. We sell large quantities — our niche is in the upper 30% of the high-end plywood market. CFP sells to large cabinet manufacturers and home improvement stores all over the United States and Canada.
Q: What is the biggest issue facing your organization today?
A: Log supply is the biggest issue right now — it seems that over the last
few years, a lot of loggers have been aging out of the workforce. It used to be logger’s children would take over their business, but that is not happening as much anymore. There is a tremendous barrier
to entry due to the expense associated
with starting your own logging firm. I’m seeing a diminishing logging force, and
it’s showing up in the quantity of wood we are able to bring into the mill. Trucking is another big issue; there is so much demand for truck drivers right now. Logging is
not a 9-5, five-days-a-week job. You’ve got to contend with bad weather and other workforce challenges.
