The second day began with presentations. Hunter Blohm, the deputy general counsel and director of federal
programs for Be Pro Be Proud, kicked
off the program by talking about his organization, which works to address the skills gap in trade occupations. Thomas Mende, CEO and president of Binderholz Timber, Inc., and Steve Willobee from Harbor Bay Ventures spoke next. Mende has combined experiences as both a manager working in the paper and forest products industry and as a business development professional. Willobee has
a real estate and economic development background and is invested in building community and business partnerships in his role at Harbor Bay Ventures. Their presentation provided an overview of
a successful mass timber development project — INTRO Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio. Following INTRO Cleveland’s completion, Harbor Bay Ventures is looking to expand this type of project to Raleigh, NC. INTRO is the first project of its kind to receive the LEED Gold standard in the state of Ohio.
After the morning break, the director of key accounts and commercial development at the North Carolina Ports Authority (NC Ports), Tom Guthrie, spoke on, “Supporting International Trade and Growth Opportunities in Forestry.” Guthrie has worked with the NC Ports since 1990 and focuses on continuing to develop business for container carriers in Wilmington, NC, with an emphasis on forestry and agriculture.
Our final speaker on Thursday was Southern Loggers Cooperative President and CEO Todd Martin. Martin gave a presentation on “Fuel Markets, Fuel Prices, and the Cost of Saving Money.” He has been working in almost every aspect of the forestry supply chain for 33 years.
After presentations were complete on Thursday, attendees of the event had the option to choose from any of the three leisure events connected to the Annual Meeting. There was golf at the Grandover Resort, sporting clays offsite at Shane’s Sporting Clays, and an essential oils workshop on “Stress Reduction with Aromatics” by Debbie Robinson with Doterra Essential Oils.
The NCFA President’s reception and awards banquet took place Thursday evening. (See page 9 for winners)
