 Education
Forestry and Environmental Camps – The NCFA annually sponsors several Forestry and Environmental Camps in communities across the state. The goal of these camps is to increase awareness of the environment by encouraging practical application of math, science, and critical thinking skills. Students participate in a variety of activities that highlight forestry and the wood products industry.
Project Learning Tree – Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an award-winning, international environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators working with students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. PLT uses the forest as a window into the environment, helping people gain an awareness and knowledge of the world around them and their place within it. Throughout the year, a network of facilitators offers workshops across the state. The NCFA is a state sponsor of the PLT program.
Sustainable Forestry Teachers Experience – The SFTE is a professional development workshop that demonstrates all elements of sustainable forestry in North Carolina. Through visits to mills, research and education centers, as well
as public and private forests, teachers learn how forestry professionals and the wood products industry are meeting society’s needs while simultaneously providing resources for the future. Experiences are held in Southern Pines, New Bern, and Asheville.
Forest Products Week Essay Contest – To celebrate Forest Products Week, the NCFA, along with its sponsors, hosts a statewide essay contest to promote the 1,000 companies directly contributing to North Carolina’s forest economy. Students in grades 3-12 submit essays that focus on the field of forestry and the wood products industry.
Branching Out with the NCFA – The NCFA provides free forestry education outreach opportunities for teachers in the central piedmont counties. Programs highlight the field of forestry and the wood products industry, and correlate to the NC Essential Standards. Programs are available for grades K-6. Special events, career days, and presentations are also available upon request.
Educational Materials – The NCFA maintains a supply of educational materials, including forestry posters, Goods from the Woods boxes and bags, and online resources. Visit ncforestry.org to view our complete inventory.
Focus on Forestry Careers – The first edition of the Focus on Forestry Careers booklet highlights 15 professionals working in our community. Booklets are available upon request and electronic copies are available on the NCFA website. This is an ongoing project and additional profiles will be added in upcoming editions.
Goods from the Woods Video Series – The Goods from the Woods film project is a miniseries of short educational videos that highlights the forest products made in the state of North Carolina. Videos will spotlight the supply chain, the processes used to make the product, and the essential workers involved. Each video will have corresponding lesson plans and activities.
