ACRES
are used to produce muscadine grapes
120 acres of muscadine grapes; on the remaining 1,450 acres we grow corn, wheat, and soybeans. Out of our 1,600 total acres, 80 acres is timberland. In 2017 and 2018, I sold 35 acres of forest that were destroyed when Hurricanes Florence and Matthew came through. Both hurricanes dropped 24 inches of rain in 12 hours.
Q: What measures does your organization take to
ensure healthy, productive, and sustainable forests?
A: The biggest thing is that I haven’t plowed the earth. If you dig down, you will find fishing worms everywhere.
It took six to eight years for the earth to turn organic. I don’t burn the fields either. We rotate every crop there is so it can
stay in a natural state that can produce
a yield. We get the soil tested every year. All of it costs money, but has to be done to help Bodenhamer be progressive in what we do. This farm of mine here has center pivot or sub-drip water under the earth. Trees have their own center pivot, and we use a media from Canada — the quality is better, I believe, and it’s similar to a peat moss. It’s a media or starter that produces the root, then it’s planted in Southeastern U.S. soil, which is good for the environment.
Q:
A: We give Lumberton a lot of trees for Arbor Day, as well as donate trees in Southern Pines and Lumberton, and
a lot of other cities in North and South Carolina. This is my heart; we also give back to our Lord, Jesus Christ, who has blessed us every day. ■
Buyers of Land and Timber
Canal Wood’s expert team delivers a comprehensive range of timberland management services. For landowners, we offer expert consultations, assessing each stand of timber and working to understand their goals. Through our experienced timber marketing services, we find the best prices for each type of timber, and
then we carefully harvest and transport the timber to the mills. We are proud to be certified by the Forest Stewardship Council
