BOOK REVIEW
Caring for Caring by
Jane Edwards
By Vincent F. Carr, DO
T here are aspects of medicine that but also to those who provide the care
to the patients. Jane Edwards takes the reader of her new book, Caring for Caring – An Enriching, Kindhearted, Ethical Journey with Our Elders, on a heartwarming retrospective of her life-long experiences working with and caring for elders. Ms. Edwards tells the stories as she lived them, thinking of how to help and how to cope during the various stages of life. Just by her presence and her listening, she has empowered many to live their lives as they wish and helped them stay independent for as long as possible.
The book is divided into
which explores some insights on family,
trust, elder perspectives, nutrition and hope; and “Journey Stories,” which are individual anecdotes of Ms. Edwards’ experiences caring for elders. She completes the book with a “Final Note,”
an essence of what she has dedicated her life to.
In telling her stories, Ms. Edwards starts each chapter with an inspirational thought from many personalities, philosophers, literature passages and unknown common folk. Each is well chosen for
the accompanying story. The narratives themselves are very real, ones that every person can easily identify with and bring a thoughtful option for some of life’s
“Caring for Caring Suggestion” summarizing the thought of the story.
Caring for Caring helps bring back the early thoughts and aspirations that inspired many
physicians to go into medicine. This book is an extremely easy read for those who
wish to recapture the simple and sincere enthusiasm of medicine.
