DHIN Makes Data Useful for Delaware Docs
The nation’s first operational statewide health information exchange, Delaware Health Information Network (DHIN), celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and today’s healthcare environment has certainly evolved from that of a decade ago.
The seamless electronic delivery of medical results is now more important than ever, and DHIN safely and efficiently delivers more than 14 million results and reports to healthcare providers each year. In fact, DHIN was recently recognized for its commitment to data protection by HITRUST CSF, the “gold standard” for measuring and certifying security management programs.
Delaware’s health information exchange (HIE) also contributes to continuity of care efforts in the First State and beyond, providing six states and the District of Columbia with admission, discharge and transfer information on patients seen at Delaware hospitals to aid in transition of care efforts.
The demand for data across the healthcare spectrum is central to DHIN’s mission of improving communication to improve healthcare delivery, and the organization recently celebrated a major milestone in moving data forward. At last count, 113 Delaware practices, including six long-term-care facilities, have contributed over 2 million continuity of care documents (CCDs) to DHIN, making critical clinical data available to thousands of practitioners through the Community Health Record.
In addition to the collection and sharing of CCDs, DHIN helps advance the cause of clinical research through a unique relationship with iSpecimen. The joint program allows hospitals and labs in the DHIN network to easily repurpose remnant clinical specimens – samples that would otherwise be discarded once patient testing is complete – into medical research programs, while reducing their costs to participate in DHIN.
The iSpecimen collaboration is a unique way to leverage the capability of the health information exchange past the point-of- care to continue to make a positive impact in medicine.
By building additional relationships with national partners and neighboring HIEs, along with sharing CCDs and offering a diverse suite of analytics products, DHIN will continue to put data to work to help reduce costs and improve care.
