After a rotating internship, I began an orthopedic surgery residency in 1963. This was interrupted by virtue of my Berry Plan obligation. Called to active duty at Fort Dix, NJ and subsequently shipped to Vietnam. I served at the 8th Field Hospital, Nha Trang, and the 93rd Evacuation Hospital at Long Binh. On return, I reentered the Orthopedic Surgery residency, completing it in 1966. Was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for the Vietnam service.

Graduated medical school 1963, followed by internship/ Berry Plan. Deferred from active duty, permitted four years of Internal Medicine/Renal fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. Then assigned to Fort Dix for one year, followed by another year in the Dialysis Unit at Third Field Hospital in Saigon, where we saw every acute renal failure (ARF) casualty in II, III and IV Corps, about 110 in total for my year. Generally massive wound soiling, ARF, and extensive tissue damage created a very lethal syndrome. ARF plus extremity wounds, 60% survival. Truncal wounds plus ARF, no survival. Approximately 65-70 casualties in the latter category, all kids. Returned stateside June of 1970, with a Bronze Star. Resigned my commission. Was promised promotion to LTC if I stayed another two years. Started practice at Straub Clinic in Honolulu. Stayed one year and returned to Wilmington. “Thank you for your service” came about 30 years later.

My graduation from medical school in 1963 was followed
by an internship and one year of residency after which, by virtue of the Berry Plan, I entered the Army as a Captain. My Basic Munson Army Hospital, the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS. The next assignment was to Vietnam as the 21-day voyage, the unit landed and established the outpatient department of the Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon. The unit was had to deal with epidemics and a variety of other problems unique to that area and situation. In response to the policy that personnel should do Civil Action when time and combat conditions permitted, I cared for the children in an orphanage. I received
an honorable discharge and was awarded the Bronze Star. The experience was unique and very worthwhile.
