LETTER TO THE EDITOR
The Delaware Medical Journal’s
“Contemporary Veterans
legacy of the recently deceased editor
of that undertaking, William Duncan,
MD. In what can only be described
as a labor of love, Bill Duncan
painstakingly, over many months,
compiled and chronicled the
military experiences of Delaware
physicians that spanned decades. Bill
Duncan had a long life and a long memory. In his introduction, he wrote of the scourge of the 1940s and ’50s — the polio epidemic — and he concludes with military physicians tackling recent worldwide epidemics, such as Ebola.
It’s not surprising that many served; what is surprising: many were silent about their service. They lived in the shadows of fathers and grandfathers who saw military service to their country as an expected obligation, a duty.
Kudos to the Journal’s staff for the time and effort they devoted to the project, and to the contributors who took the time to
Herman Wouk wrote that “the beginning of the end of war lies in remembrance” and he concludes his epic World War II novel War and Remembrance with this thought: “Remembrance can lead us from the long, long time of war to the time of peace.”
It is in the remembrances that Bill Duncan brought to life in
some solace in the thought that their military service was noble and praiseworthy.
Thanks, 030618 (Bill’s service number), for letting us share our military experiences with the wider Delaware medical community.
