The 230th Annual Meeting of the
Medical Society of Delaware took place on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at the Medical Society of Delaware Building and Conference Center in Newark, DE.
American Medical Association President Patricia A. Harris, MD, MA; Michele Manahan, MD, President of the Maryland Medical Society; and Lawrence R. John,
MD, President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, were guest attendees during the morning program. PAWS for People made a special appearance providing pet-assisted therapy for the attendees.
Three education sessions were presented in the morning prior to the commencement of the Council Meeting, providing a total of 2.5 continuing medical education credits to be claimed by attending all three educational sessions.
This year’s educational program was
built around the topic of “Physician Resilience.” Recognized leaders in the area of physician and patient wellness provided information about being well and staying well. The Lewis B. Flinn Lecture began the educational program with speaker Karl Doghramji, MD presenting on “Sleep: The Neglected Vital Sign.” Dr. Doghramji, Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology, and Medicine and Director at the Jefferson Sleep Disorders Center, educated the audience on neurophysiological processes underlying sleep and wakefulness, the consequence of disrupted sleep quality
and quantity, and managing sleep-related
Godfrey, PhD, Behavioral Medicine Researcher, Clinical Psychologist, and Program Manager from the Care for the Caregiver Program at ChristianaCare, provided the fundamentals of the “second victim” phenomenon, discussed the peer support program at ChristianaCare, and explained how physicians can support second victims. “Nutrition Update: What’s New in 2020?” was the presentation provided by Marijane Hynes, MD, Clinical Professor, General Internal Medicine
and Director of the Weight Management Program at George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates. She described current evidence-based nutritional principles and how to counsel patients; what makes a healthy diet and how it relates to weight management and exercise prescriptions; as well as vitamin supplementation, especially Vitamin D, calcium, and Omega-3s.
