A New Chapter for Medical Society of Delaware
After serving as the Executive Director of the Medical Society of Delaware (MSD) for more than a quarter of a century, Mark Meister retired from that position on July 1, 2017. Prior this important position was conducted
and attracted the interest of a number
of outstanding candidates. Included in
this group was Mark B. Thompson, who has been with MSD since 2011. At the completion of the search process, Mr. Thompson was offered and accepted
the position and has been serving as Executive Director since July 1, 2017. This begins a new chapter for MSD.
Many of us know Mr. Thompson from
his work at MSD as the External Affairs committees, including the Government Affairs Committee (GAC). I had the privilege of being the chair of that committee from 2015-2017 during which time I had the opportunity to work
with Mr. Thompson and observe his commitment to both physicians and MSD.
Based upon his previous work
experience prior to coming to MSD in 2011, Mr. Thompson brings a depth of understanding about the rapidly changing health care landscape and environment. From 1994-1996 he held the position
of Associate Director, Community Relations with Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. From 1997-1999 he served as Director
of Communications and Marketing at Saint Joseph’s Regional Health Network
in Reading/Lancaster, Penn. Here
in Delaware he was the Director of Marketing and Community Relations at Saint Francis Healthcare in Wilmington from 1999-2006, during a critical time of change and turn-around effort.
From 2006-2008 he served as Director of Public Relations and Community Health at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. From 2008-2011 he held the position of Assistant Vice President, of External Affairs at the University of Maryland. In each of these positions, Mr. Thompson had the opportunity to work with physicians and understand the issues facing them at every level
and type of practice. He now brings
that exposure and experience to his new position as Executive Director.
At the start of this new year, there are both continuing and new challenges, as well as opportunities facing physicians and MSD. In his now, not so new position as Executive Director for the past six months, I have asked Mr. Thompson to reintroduce himself in this edition of the Delaware Medical Journal and to share his thoughts and vision for MSD moving forward (see next page). I look forward
to working with Mr. Thompson this year during my term as MSD President.
