     Foreword
  BAlways On Call
ryn Mawr Hospital looks much different from the ambulance bay. I’ve been there hundreds of times, both as a patient and a journalist. I’ve even been inside an operating room to witness spinal surgery for our December 2016 issue.
But on this particular Monday in September, I rolled through Bryn Mawr Hospital’s EMS entrance behind a stretcher and three members of the Narberth Ambulance team. I’d been riding with them to get a first-hand look at how they
operate—and it’s something I’ll never forget (“Safety First,” page 40). To say the least, it gave me a whole new perspective on medicine.
With only the equipment on their “trucks,” local EMS pros deliver expert care in a fast-paced, sometimes dangerous, usually anonymous environment. “We don’t do it for recognition,” says Christopher Flanagan, Narberth Ambulance’s chief, who is also Radnor Township’s police superintendent. “We do it to serve patients and our communities.”
Patients also get top-notch treatment from our region’s physicians—and more than
700 of them were named to this year’s Top Doctors list (page 54). Each year, we continue to expand the number of categories to reflect the growing number of healthcare specialties in our region.
Our healthcare coverage is also expanding. You can now get the latest on fitness, nutrition, holistic treatments and more with our new Healthy You e-newsletter. We name our favorite workouts and offer inspiring real-life patient stories and Q&As with medical experts. There’s also “The Pulse,” a list of must-do wellness events in our region. Coming in 2020, look for even more features, plus exclusive wellness-themed events just for you. To join the MLT fit tribe, sign up for our Healthy You e-newsletter at www.mainlinetoday. com. And be sure to follow us using the hashtag #MLTHealthyYou.
ALSO IN THIS ISSUE: These days, you could make the argument that, when it comes to the region’s private Catholic colleges and universities, there’s Villanova and there’s everyone else. Meanwhile, Saint Joseph’s University is moving forward with its own plans for growth without getting bogged down in such comparisons. A former adjunct professor at Saint Joe’s and a current visiting professor at Nova, MLT contributor Michael Bradley has unique insight on the struggles and successes of both institutions. For “Chasing the Cats” (page 46), he also taps some of the top brass at other local institutions to get their take on the rapidly evolving higher education environment, locally and elsewhere.
From our MLT family to yours: Best wishes for a healthy, happy holiday season.
