At The Jefferson School, we are reimagining education based on the way children really learn. We believe students learn best when they are encouraged to:
• THINK, not just memorize;
• ENGAGE in multi-sensory and hands-on
learning experiences;
• OBSERVE, LISTEN and PARTICIPATE IN discussions and projects that challenge and inspire.
We also believe that SPENDING TIME IN NATURE is the key to engaged, experiential learning. The Jefferson School campus is an ecological treasure, with two ponds, trails with fitness stations, gardens, a greenhouse, goats, chickens and bee hives. Since 2010, we have been working with regional partners to build a nature-centered, hands-on curriculum for our students.
The curriculum in JK and Kindergarten relies on evidence-based brain science related
to how young children learn. Our dynamic program continues in the elementary grades allowing students to advance at rates that match their abilities while meeting and often exceeding Delaware state standards.
The middle school years combine the exhilaration of exploring new friendships and interests with the unpredictability of hormonal development, peer pressure and emerging self-consciousness. At TJS, we are experts at helping students navigate their way through the challenging bridge between childhood and independence with self- confidence.
As a result of these efforts TJS students are known as fearless and imaginative learners, who are able to handle the challenges of any secondary school setting.
