EDITOR’S NOTE
TLight Show
here’s always something momentous about a fireworks display.
The splashy, unpredictable bursts of color, the way the light dances in different shapes that trail off into nothingness. This past October, many
of us witnessed a different kind of fireworks display—one that was eerily quiet, where the colors were perhaps a bit less vibrant but no less impressive, dancing in the sky without smoke to obscure the view.
On a beautiful Thursday evening in early fall, a geomagnetic storm lit up the night sky. According to South Africa’s National Space Agency, the Oct. 10 storm originated from a solar flare that erupted from a sunspot seven days earlier, impacting high-frequency communications and resulting in a 20-minute radio blackout over the African region. Over our way, the aurora borealis was on full display.
It wasn’t the first time I’d seen the northern lights. I’ve been to Iceland, where they’re far more vivid. But it was warmer viewing weather here. I walked out to my backyard to look up at one of my favorite trees, a lone sycamore. I stood there under a moonlit sky savoring the display. A little later, I went back outside, and it was even more impressive—a red/orange burst high in the sky.
For the image here, I used my Nikon Z9 and a 14-24 mm lens at F/2.8,
200 ISO, with a shutter speed between eight and 30 seconds. But you don’t have to be a camera geek to appreciate the results.
