We featured consummate horseman F. Bruce Miller on the cover of our Spring 2023 issue. So, it seemed only fitting to devote a portion of this issue to his talented grandson, Teddy Davies. Winner of last year’s Maryland Hunt Cup, Davies is currently nursing a broken collarbone after an unfortunate fall at the Grand National in April. He’s the 19-year-old offspring of Miller’s daughter, Blythe Miller Davies, and her husband, Joe Davies. Both have their own stellar job histories as riders and trainers.
Teddy’s dad had 13 Maryland Hunt Cup starts, winning more than 100 of his 500 races as a rider. His mom was the first top woman rider in the history of the National Steeplechase Association. Between 1978 and 2002, she won more than 300 of her 1,000 races. Her father, meanwhile, racked up five steeplechase season championships before becoming master of Mr. Stewart’s Cheshire Foxhounds. If anyone is looking for living, breathing proof that equestrian excellence runs in the blood, the Davies are it. “Riding is hereditary—it’s certainly hereditary in our family,” Blythe Miller Davies told Joe Pirro, who wrote this month’s feature on her son. “We’ve been fortunate, and it’s wonderful we can share it.”
On another note, I’m delighted to welcome Gina Lizzo to our editorial team as managing editor. She’s taken over for Kim Douglas, who recently stepped away from the position to devote more time to other pursuits. Our former digital editor, Lizzo is no stranger to our region. She’s a graduate of La Salle University, where she excelled on the school’s Division 1 golf team, playing on many of the courses around the area. These days, when she’s not looking for the next big story, she can be found on the pickleball court.
