a good place to read a book. If you want big Atlantic Ocean waves and miles of sand, hit South Beach, just outside of Edgartown. The beaches on Chappaquiddick island are fine, too, but be prepared to wait a long time to get on the small Chappy Ferry to cross the few hundred feet of water that sets it apart. Better to come back in the off season.
What else? Here are some options.
Order salmon eggs Benedict for breakfast at the Artcliff Diner, creamy quahog chowder for lunch at the Black Dog and whatever dinner item the chef recommends at Outermost Inn. Owned by James Taylor’s brother, Hugh, and his wife, Jeanne, the Outermost is perched above the Gay Head cliffs and offers
stunning views.
Early the next morning, return to Gay Head and walk from the parking lot to the rock- strewn beach to soak up the sights and sounds of island nature at its best.
In Oak Bluffs, roam Cottage City, an enclave of brightly painted gingerbread houses
left over from the town’s camp-meeting
days. OB also has the largest year-around population of Blacks, and its Inkwell Beach is almost world-famous.
Do some Saturday morning shopping at the farmers market in West Tisbury.
Stroll through the fishing village of Menemsha and buy fresh seafood for dinner. On a late Friday afternoon, grab lobster rolls at Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven.
Browse and leisure shop in Vineyard Haven or Edgartown.
Look for great paintings to take home in each town, especially Granary Gallery in West Tisbury.
Go golfing at Farm Neck in OB. Presidents Clinton and Obama made the rounds here when they were vacationing on the island.
You will see celebrities. But Vineyard folks don’t stare, point or ask to take selfies. It’s cool to notice while not noticing.
If you like to swim, hike, bike or run, the Vineyard is your place.
