The Kellys’ home makeover began with a coffered ceiling in the den.
   3 INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS
1Go all in when updating adjoining spaces. Focus on
the entire sightline, instead of one room at a time. “If you freshen up just one room, all of a sudden, the rest of the space looks dated,” says interior designer Glenna Stone.
2Enhance a home’s flow by choosing a single type of flooring, rather than a patchwork of wood, tile and carpet. Hardwoods are a time-tested choice that also add to a home’s value. “Wood floors will certainly wear more than a tile floor in
a kitchen, but it’s not a drastic amount,” Stone says. “Minimizing wear to the wood is as simple as putting a mat in front of the sink.”
3Don’t neglect the details. Think trim on pillows and curtains, accent on furniture, and millwork on walls and cabinetry. These are the touches that elevate a space and create a custom look.

“Kim and Don have an appreciation
for the details that really make a space. Millwork elevates the room and
gives it a sense of something unique.” —Interior designer Glenna Stone
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
In the den, the initial inspiration for the makeover, Stone designed a modern take on a traditional mantel with an inset of Carrarra marble set in a herringbone pattern. Throw pillows on the sofa are accented with leather trim. Millwork on the walls compliments the coffered ceiling. “Kim and Don have an appreciation
for the details that really make a space. Millwork elevates the room and gives it a sense of something unique,” Stone says. “It’s very livable—and very much them.”
As for the Rileys, they’re enjoying their lighter, brighter surroundings. “Glenna and her team had out-of-the-box ideas we wouldn’t have thought of,” says Don. “They knew from the start what our vision was, even if we didn’t know what it was yet.” TH
