EDITOR’S NOTE
WELCOME TO
BRANDYWINE VALLEY HOME
We’re delighted to bring you the premiere issue of Brandywine Valley Home. With our uniquely beautiful region as the backdrop, we’ve set about spotlighting its most glorious abodes and the talented people who create them. In doing so, we hope to inspire renewed appreciation of your own home—and perhaps that next improvement project.
For a century, folks in Chester County have passed by the five-story clocktower landmark that rises from a swath of green bordering a country road. Many of them have, no doubt, wondered what it’s like inside the mansion at Clocktower Farm. You’ll see for yourself in this issue, where we take you behind the scenes
of a magnificent renovation helmed by Archer & Buchanan, the
West Chester architects who brought the vision of farm’s owners to life. Along with a former du Pont estate and a barn built for entertaining,
you’ll also get an inside look at a home that isn’t visible from any road. Stylish, sophisticated and modern, it’s tucked away in a wooded pocket of Chadds Ford. Builder Scott Porter channeled the owners’ love of minimalism into a stone-and-glass structure that’s in perfect harmony with its surroundings.
But BVH isn’t just about eye candy. Savor sweet ideas from interior designers, resources for growing your garden, and inspiration for creating the abode of your dreams. And seeing as I also call the Brandywine Valley home, I’m happy to share a few of my favorite things:
Auctions. They’re a great resource when shopping for vintage pieces—everything from fine china to grand pianos. Check out the oil painting sold by Briggs auctioneers in our Shop feature.
Home tours. Want to get inspired? Mark your calendar for Chester County Day on Oct. 7. It’s the nation’s longest-running home tour.
Gardening. For me, it’s the best way to get in touch with the earth, whether its a window box of herbs and geraniums or a raised-bed vegetable garden. In these parts, we can learn from the best, among them Mount Cuba, Longwood Gardens and the Delaware Center for Horticulture.
Above all, make your home your happy place, a sanctuary that brings you peace and joy. With love, from my home to yours.
