IThe Great Chase
began following the hounds in 1990, when I was assisting the late Anthony Edgeworth with his book, the Brandywine: A Legacy
of Tradition in du Pont-Wyeth Country. Though I grew up in
Unionville and Chadds Ford, I really knew nothing about this other world—until Nancy Penn Smith Hannum, master for Mr. Stewart’s Cheshire Foxhounds, opened the door of her jeep to me.
Away we went, and I began to learn more about this unique avocation steeped in history. I’ve been fortunate enough to follow several packs over time, each with their own unique character (and characters) and hounds bred to work in a specific countryside.
In particular, the Radnor Hunt opened my eyes to different equestrian communities and reenforced my awareness of the value of open space and the maintenance of pure watersheds. Radnor continues its hunting legacy and tradition, even amid the shrinking countryside. Its masters and staff have maintained the highest-quality hounds and sport for their subscribers. Such perseverance over 142 years should be lauded.
My hope for them is that they continue to, as Mrs. Hannum would say, “Try on, try on.”
