up with people like Valerie Johnson and bringing together the school superinten- dent and head of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, she has encouraged her community to rally behind manufactur- ing and forest products to solve problems.
“I want Oregon jobs for Oregon kids,” said Lundberg. “I want them to think of the woods and ask what can I create with this that makes the world a better place.”
Last year, Springfield renovated Hamlin Middle School, appropriately, the home of the Loggers. The newly ren- ovated school features wood beams and columns throughout the building.
The structure has three large segments of CLT and dozens of beautiful wood beams and columns. The “Maker Space,” focused on hands-on learning for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), features large garage doors that open to the outside, and the room is framed by a CLT wall.
“Between the parking garage and the school, I think people will start to see the different possibilities and what can be made of wood,” Mayor Lundberg said. “I hope we can get the students excited and thinking about what wood can mean in their own lives, in their own education, their own career choices.”
