Arts & Entertainment Experiences
Enjoy A Cultural Feast
While Garrett County is famous for its scenic beauty and outdoor activities, the area is also home to
a thriving arts and entertainment community. In fact, the region’s beautiful landscapes of rolling hills and snow- capped mountains have inspired local, regional and even international artists.
Garrett County has two state-designated Arts & Entertainment Districts —
in Grantsville and Oakland. Artists, performers and gallery owners gravitate toward these areas for special resources and incentives, so that’s where you will find concentrations of artists, events and art-related businesses.
The Garrett County Arts Council (garrettarts. org) has more than 40 years of experience promoting the arts, sponsoring events and making grants to artists and organizations to enrich the local arts scene. Throughout the recent pandemic, the Arts Council’s staff has continued to work remotely and is striving to adjust to the ever-changing situation. Online events and opportunities are being created, so please check the website for updates.
The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF, artsandentertainment.org) provides fine
arts performances mainly to enhance the
arts curriculum for high school students. The organization plans to start the 2021 season in a virtual environment.
GLAF has partnered with HART For Animals to sponsor the Deep Creek Lake Art & Wine Festival (deepcreekwinefest.com) each September. The one-day event features beautifully handcrafted works by local and regional artists, more than 200 wines from Maryland and beyond, craft beers, live entertainment, food, a silent auction and more. Proceeds benefit the animal rescue organization and GLAF. The 2021 event is scheduled for Sept. 11.
Deep Creek Pottery (deepcreekpottery.com) is a great place to pick up painted pottery, such as Deep Creek Lake mugs. For DIY artists of all ages, Deep Creek Pottery offers a selection of take-and- make kits, including Christmas-themed ones.
