Locust Grove Estate in Poughkeepsie was the summer retreat of the telegraph and code inventor Samuel F. B. Morse. Later home to the Young family, the Italianate-style mansion is now open for tours, allowing visitors an up-close view at more than 15,000 pieces of fine and decorative arts, paintings and furniture. Spend the day exploring the grounds, which feature 200 acres of hiking trails
with views of the Hudson River,
an ornamental flower garden and a kitchen garden with heirloom vegetable varieties from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

Discover the encyclopedic art museum on the Vassar College campus, with changing exhibitions and a permanent collection ranging from the ancient to the contemporary. Many of the 19th-century Hudson River School paintings that captured the beauty of our landscapes are

Bardavon 1869 Opera House Opened as the Collingwood Opera House in 1869,
the opulent
structure has

Mark Twain and
Aretha Franklin.
In 1976, after
spells as a vaudeville house and a cinema, the Bardavon reopened as a general performing arts theater. Today, catch performances by
the Hudson Valley Philharmonic,
live simulcasts of New York City’s Metropolitan Opera and leading performers in music, opera, literature and comedy, including author David Sedaris, Boadway powerhouse Audra McDonald, and EGOT award winner John Legend.
