Explore our history, shaped by the Wappinger tribe who originally inhabited these lands, the Dutch and German settlers who arrived in the 1600s and 1700s and the Gilded Age industrialists who built their opulent country estates here in the 1800s. Discover Troutbeck, the site of the 1916 and 1933 Amenia Conferences where W.E.B. DuBois and others discussed ways to advance the rights of Black Americans, leading to the formation of the NAACP. Dutchess is committed to providing a growing number of accessible parks, recreational activities, events and sensory- friendly experiences. A 12-passenger, wheelchair-accessible electric tram improves accessibility for those with mobility challenges to enjoy the Walkway Over the Hudson’s entire 1.28-mile span. The packed stone-dust Woodland Trail at Stony Kill Farm is a perfect half-mile path for individuals

a 16,000-square-foot accessible public playground, allows children of all abilities to play and learn together.
Wilcox Memorial Park in Stanfordville has accessible campsites. The Bardavon 1869 Opera House, Fisher Center at Bard and other major entertainment venues provide wheelchair and companion seating for events as well as assisted listening devices.
