offer free in-person and online train- ings on how to become your own com- munity’s biggest advocate. Pagliassoti is quick to point out that the new wave of social media “influencing” has al- lowed activists and organizers to gath- er virtually and rally for seats at the table. We all know there is strength in numbers, and thanks to the power of social media, like-minded organiz- ers from every corner of the globe can “gather” to support individuals or causes together. She noted that the TikTok movement spearheaded by Gen Z has led to unprecedented gains in raising the awareness of envi- ronmental justice and climate change issues around the world. The 2020 presidential election demonstrated just how powerful online organizing can be, as both presidential campaigns spent hundreds of millions of dollars
on online advertising, electronic can- vassing and digital communities in order to rally voters to the polls to influence a record-breaking voter turnout on both sides of the ticket.
On a smaller scale, both Ms. Pagliassoti and Ms. Shabazz recom- mend starting simple and local. Ms. Shabazz recommends starting by taking a look around the neighbor- hood and asking how you can improve your block or community. Next is the “doing,” and that means joining your local neighborhood association and figuring out how to use the neigh- borhood’s existing assets to achieve what the neighborhood needs. From that point, Ms. Shabazz recommends simply working with individuals who share your goals to divide the tasks at hand and communicate with the group and its constituents in order to make
improvements to your neighborhood. This could be anything from starting a community garden to organizing a neighborhood Little Free Library, cleaning up a playground or advocat- ing for safer streets. Today, we know change is up to us, and we all have our part to play. Start in your own back- yard, and together, as a community, we can own the future.
