many workers they planned to hire in coming years.
That information became the basis for Zip Code Wilmington. Ben and his colleagues did a great job of gathering employer support and fi- nancial resources to get the school started and re- cruited a terrific staff to lead the way. The results have been incredible: In three years, more than 200 students have graduated from the 12-week program and achieve, on average, a 114-percent increase in salary after participation. I’m not aware of any other opportunities for individuals to so dramatically increase their earnings in such a short period of time.
My experience with Pathways to Prosperity and Zip Code Wilmington reinforced my view that a focus on workforce development and skills training is the most important ingredient in modern-day economic development. I’m de- lighted to see that Governor John Carney is tak- ing these initiatives to the next level. That will be to Delaware’s long-term benefit.

  Theatre Company. He led the Friends of Wilmington Parks for many years and his touch can be seen in the banks of daffodils and other native plants that thrive along South Park Drive. He values public service and was an early and active supporter of his friend Pete du Pont’s political career. Dad loves to read about many subjects and has made a particular study of the Civil War. He can recount every battle, obscure skirmishes and even detailed information about the principal figures in those skirmishes. Dad golfs, continues to play tennis and, other than a few days around Christmas, skied every day this past holiday season.
Since retiring a little more than 10 years ago, Dad has continued to rebal- ance, transferring the energy and passion that he had devoted to practicing law into his myriad pursuits. The family, now spread out across the country and abroad, looks forward to gathering three generations together this summer in Maine, where we will hike, eat popovers, play tennis and sail. 
While he enjoys the experiences and perspective gained from travel, Dad is proud of his Delaware roots and the opportunities for strengthening communities at home. He has served on numerous boards, including Tower Hill School and Planned Parenthood. He was a founder of the Delaware
