Bentley Systems is not a car company — that would be Bentley Motors. But chances are, every time you get in your car, you’ll encounter a road, bridge, or building powered by the company’s solutions.
In a nutshell, Bentley develops, licenses, sells, and supports software and services for the design, construction, and operation of infrastructure. The business was founded in 1984 by five brothers — Greg, Keith, Barry, Raymond, and Scott Bentley — who grew the business via a series of strategic acquisitions over the ensuing decades, then took it public in 2020.
“Our mission is to advance the world’s infrastructure with innovative software,” said Charles Boruchowitz, Bentley’s Government Relations Manager. “We look at it as sustaining and growing the world’s economy.”
Indeed, with a presence in 194 countries and an emphasis on environmental sustainability, Bentley is in a position
to make a real difference in how roads, bridges, power plants, windmills, and many other pieces of infrastructure around the world perform.
The scale of Bentley’s impact is hard
to overstate. “Every state Department
of Transportation utilizes one of our components at least in some capacity,” said Boruchowitz. As one example of a project that Bentley is involved in locally, he mentioned Longwood Gardens. “When they embarked on their recent parking expansion project, they used our software to design the project, including the integration of a digital twin that will help design future expansions.”
Today, Bentley has annual revenues of around $1 billion and more than 5,000 employees — or “colleagues,” as Bentley calls them — in 40 countries.
By the nature of its business and scope, Bentley is a global player, and that fact does shape its culture, Boruchowitz said. “We have such a diverse set of colleagues. They’re our front line and they make it possible for us to succeed. Diversity, equity, and inclusion is a major pillar for us and it’s one of the things that set us apart.”

INVESTING IN THE COMMUNITY AND
THE FUTURE
Another major component of the company’s culture: philanthropy. Bentley’s headquarters are located in Exton, on a campus it shares with the Chester County Food Bank, an important community partner.
“That partnership began in the early or mid-2000s and has strengthened further over the years,” Boruchowitz said, including with the food bank’s move that put it next door to Bentley.
Each year, Bentley extends significant support to the food bank. That support
is monetary, for example in the form of a $200,000 matching grant in the fall of 2022, but it also comes in the form of food. “Our colleagues volunteer to literally grow food in Bentley’s backyard and we donate that to the food bank every year,” Boruchowitz said. “It’s showing everyone that we can do more than just write a check for a donation.”
Bentley colleagues are also encouraged to make a difference through the company’s annual Impact Day. “Everyone gets a day of their choice to take off and they can use it to volunteer for an organization of their choice, no questions asked,” he said.
