Sheely also explained that the company works hard to be transparent in its communities, publicizing well in advance
any work it may be doing, such as water-line replacement projects, flushing fire hydrants or temporary water service outages for repairs.
In addition to keeping safe water flowing, Pennsylvania American Water dedicates employee time and company resources to being a community partner and good neighbor.
“We encourage employee volunteerism and donate thousands of dollars to charitable organizations — more than $200,000 in 2019,” said Sheely. “We also provide environmental grants for organizations and projects that improve our watersheds and other areas, provide grants to dozens of fire departments each year, offer a scholarship program for high school seniors entering fields of study related to the water industry, and provide customers in need with assistance on their water and sewer bills.”
The company’s H2O — Help to Others — assistance program provides bill discounts and emergency grants to those who qualify, as well as an education program of water-saving tips and devices. In 2019, the H2O program helped 1,440 households throughout Pennsylvania with bill assistance grants totaling more than $458,000.
Through a Building Better Communities grant from the American Water Charitable Foundation, the company helped water run just for fun in Coatesville’s Palmer Park. The $150,000 grant administered by the National Recreation and Parks Association enabled Coatesville to revitalize the community park with a splash pad and seven water features that include a stream, wading area and an old-fashioned, working hand pump.
Pennsylvania American Water sponsors many community events — 5Ks, creek clean-ups, day camps and more — across the communities it serves. The enthusiasm of the water company employees makes these successful. “Our Coatesville employees are eager to take part. When there is a community event, you do not have to ask twice,” Sheely added.
“We appreciate the strong sense of community and the skilled, dedicated staff we find in
this region,” said Mike Doran, President of Pennsylvania American Water. “As Pennsylvania American Water continues to expand its Southeast Pennsylvania footprint, we are always glad to add new systems to the family.”
