Mount Vernon
Birthplace of everyone from E.B. White, Art Carney, and Dick Clark to Denzel Washington and DMX, Mount Vernon is a bustling urban hub of 70,000 residents. The city is known for both its diversity and its art-and-culture footprint. Don’t miss: A visit to St. Paul’s Church National Historic Site, built in the 1600s; a swim at Wilson’s Woods Park and Wave Pool; a famous slice at Johnny’s Pizzeria and classic “N’awlins” food at The Bayou.
Pelham
The result of a 1654 treaty with Siwanoy Indians, Pelham is the oldest town in Westchester. It contains the independently incorporated villages of Pelham and Pelham Manor and is known for pretty Colonial and Victorian homes. Don’t miss: Catch a flick at The Picture House Regional Film Center or an exhibit at Pelham Art Center; enjoy family arcade night at Dave & Buster’s; get a caffeine fix at Café Ammi or try Cantina Lobos for creative Mexican fare.
Rye Brook
There may be no actual downtown, but the revamped Rye Ridge Shopping Center — featuring eateries, boutiques, and trendy workout spots — serves as community
gathering place. Rye Brook is also home to the heralded Blind Brook school district. Don’t miss: Explore the 35 pastoral acres of Crawford Park; indulge in fast-casual Mediterranean at CAVA and some of the county’s best pizza at Fortina.
Scarsdale
With a median income in excess of $250K, Scarsdale is Westchester’s wealthiest town. It’s conveniently located near the Bronx River Parkway and boasts renowned schools and a charming, Tudor-style downtown. Don’t miss: Stock up on wine at the famed Zachy’s Wine & Liquor and cakes at the equally acclaimed Lulu Cake Boutique; downtown eats include upscale Italian Café Alaia, Le Curry, a South Indian fusion spot, and Via Forno for wood-fired pizzas.
White Plains
A bustling commercial center and seat of county government, White Plains is the epicenter of Westchester. Urban renewal booms everywhere; shoppers splurge at three major malls; and nightlife is vibrant. Outside the city center you’ll find gracious, leafy neighborhoods.
