                        THE GROTTO
Nestled in a rustic tunnel in the heart of the Main Fountain Garden is the Grotto at Longwood Gardens. The Grotto is a secret space of peace and solitude with an otherworldly aura.
It is conceptually the source of water for the fountains at Longwood, as a cylindrical curtain of water constantly falls within the rough stone walls. Cool, quiet and softly lit, the Grotto and take in the wonder.
THE WHARTON ESHERICK MUSEUM
Wharton Esherick, known as the “Dean of American Craftsmen,” was a sculptor who worked primarily
in wood. He molded furniture, interiors and buildings to create sculptural environments. His work can be seen today in the collections of The Philadelphia Museum of
Art, The Metropolitan Museum of
Art in New York, and many others. His hilltop studio and residence remains one of his most creative endeavors. The studio is a National Historic Landmark for Architecture and became the Wharton Esherick Museum in 1972, featuring more than 200 of his works on exhibition.
