On July 4, 1776, the 13 American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.
One month later, 30,000 British troops landed in New York and then drove General Washington’s army from the city. By the spring of 1777, a plan developed by British General Howe had been approved to attack Philadelphia by sea. In July 1777, Howe’s army
of some 15,000 men embarked from New York City on 260 ships to besiege the colonial capital. After considerable misfortune, Howe’s force landed in Elkton, Maryland. During the month of September, approximately 30,000 troops moved through Chester County and faced each other in major engagements. On September 11, 1777, Howe’s army launched a           during the Battle of Brandywine.
