“While we’re not teaching blockchain, you’re going to
see more of the education of the theory behind it. But
the fundamentals are still the same. Hard skills like understanding programming languages like JavaScript and .NET are definitely the framework behind this,” Tech Impact Executive Director Patrick Callihan said. “What’s interesting is there’s a focus on soft skills like logic and business acumen. Ten years ago, it was really about the code, and now it’s
about solving problems with the code.”
At Code Differently, an experimental learning coding program launched in 2017, that talent is already being developed as early as elementary and middle school since the future definitely needs tech-savvy workers. Stephanie Eldridge,
CEO of Code Differently, said that if the pandemic has any lessons, it’s that every business needs technology to operate.
“We think about hiring holistically, so we’re working
with businesses to understand their needs and to tailor the curriculum for it and be part of the solution,” Eldridge said. “The idea behind it is that you don’t have to know everything about the environment, just how you can connect with the architecture. Sometimes, I think blockchain programmers are a sexy way of saying you’re a strong programmer that offers blockchain services.”
From the vantage point as an advisor in the financial services sector, Collins said while there’s high demand for coders in general, adding a strong knowledge base on blockchain to draw on to advise companies moving forward. With Delaware’s
deep bench of financial services to support banking titans, and government and educational leaders taking note to make investments like the rising FinTech Center at University of Delaware’s STAR Campus, the state is well positioned to
be a leader in the sector.
It also gives companies all across the country to tap into Delaware’s workforce, since the pandemic has dramatically changed how people work.
“It’s now getting to the point where people are making more exotic products and credit vehicles, which is our sweet spot because we really have credit maintained,” Collins said. “But other people are on this like a laser... we have an enormous amount of potential. It’s been there from the beginning.”
