position demonstrates the value we place as an institution on inclusivity, school leadership believes there is a risk inherent in creating a position devoted solely to issues of diversity and inclusion. Like the school’s spirituality, everyone — not just clergy — has a responsibility to practice and model the spirituality of the Gentleman Saint. The same is true for diversity and inclusion:
it is not the responsibility of one employee. Success only comes when every employee and student understands that we all have a role to play to advance our mission in this area.
Salesianum believes being transparent about our own shortcomings is an important step
to demonstrate to our students
that transformation, maturation
and growth are not limited solely
to them. All of us – including the House of Sales – are on a journey toward true perfection, which, as Saint Francis de Sales would point out, requires diligence, patience and constant attention, never believing you have done enough.
And so it is with other aspects
of our mission: progress must continue through careful reflection and planning. That process is manifest most clearly in the
work of Salesianum’s Board of Trustees as they spent much of 2017–18 developing a new five-year institutional plan. Virtually all the items from the prior plan, ratified
by the trustees in 2013, were either completed or modified — many ahead of schedule. The success
of the prior plan set the stage for
an equally ambitious road map for the next five years at Salesianum. The new plan, which is still being finalized, will focus on some of the same areas as the prior plan, but will also put forth some new priorities, particularly as it relates to the physical plant.
One area that featured prominently in the prior plan, which will continue to be a point of emphasis in the new plan, are the employees of Salesianum. Attracting and retaining the best talent is necessary for an institution like Salesianum to fully realize its mission. To this end, the
