The Towns of Putnam County
CARMEL
Set amid broad and spacious vistas, the hamlet of Carmel bustles with a thriving and historically preserved downtown. Wander charming, brick-lined streets festooned
with old fashioned street lamps. Pay a pilgrimage to the statue honoring Sybil Luddington, known as “The Female Paul Revere” for warning local militia of a nearby threat posed by British troops during the Revolutionary War. If you’re a ghost hunter or a thrill seeker, the historic and “haunted” Smalley’s Inn is a must-see. Walk, jog or bike along the paths of Putnam Trailway or fish along the shore of Carmel’s sparkling lakes, streams and ponds.
COLD SPRING
Located 50 miles north of Manhattan, on the banks of the mighty Hudson River, the village of Cold Spring offers a bucolic escape to New York City day trippers and those seeking a charming change of pace. Dotted with antique shops and boutique clothing stores, Cold Spring’s Main Street features gourmet and artisanal food offer- ings, seasonal outdoor dining, live outdoor entertainment, and a riverfront park.
GARRISON
Featuring views resembling masterworks from the Hudson River School of Painting, Garrison is set on a scenic Hudson shore- line, directly across from West Point military academy. Visitors can arrive at Garrison station via the Metro-North Railroad, which is adjacent to the Garrison Arts Center at historic Garrison’s Landing. Offering a timeless sense of character and charm, highlights of Garrison’s plentiful historical sites include Boscobel, the restored 19th century mansion and museum, and Graymoor, a Franciscan community and monastery.
MAHOPAC
