WITH ITS EASYGOING CHARM, Baltimore has earned
a reputation as a welcoming city
for everyone and as a destination
of choice for LGBTQ travelers. Residents take justifiable pride in their progressive city and particularly in the fact that Maryland was among the first states to legalize same sex marriage — and the first to do so by voter referendum.
Compact and sensibly laid out, Baltimore is a great city for walking and it’s an easy city to get to know. Most visitors will want to start exploring at the city’s world-famous Inner Harbor, but newcomers truly get a feel of the city once they explore
the historic neighborhoods surrounding the harbor and beyond.
Mount Vernon is the
city’s historic and
unofficial LGBTQ
neighborhood. The
highest concentration of
bars and LGBTQ-owned
businesses can be found
here, but the community has
put down roots all over the city, including such neighborhoods as Lauraville, Charles Village, Patterson Park and Old Goucher, where
the LGBT Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland (GLCCB) recently relocated.
Baltimoreans have always embraced
the quirky and even the surreal,
as evidenced by native son John Waters, the patron saint of the oddball, who introduced the world to Baltimore’s charm and creativity
through such films as “Pink Flamingos” and “Hairspray.”
Writers such as Edgar Allan Poe and F. Scott
Fitzgerald have called Baltimore home,
as have musicians
as diverse as Billie
Holliday, David Byrne, Tupaq Shakur and Sisqo.
Whether you are famous or not, Baltimore is a great
place for couples, families and groups. See for yourself and discover what you’ve been missing in Baltimore.
