Joe Tiberi, one of the top boxers in Delaware history, was among nine athletes inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum & Hall of Fame, and honored at the state’s premier sports banquet on May 18 in Wilmington.
Joe Tiberi had an amateur boxing record of 44-4-2 with 31 knockouts, followed by a professional record of 18-5-2 with 13 knockouts during the 1970s and 1980s. He fought eight undefeated boxers, beating five of them.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia researcher Riccardo Goddardi, Ph.D., has been named a “Young Innovator of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering” by Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering, the official journal of the Biomedical Engineering Society.
Dr. Goddardi, who leads CHOP’s Bioengineering and Biomaterials lab, was recognized for his research to prevent subglottic stenosis in children, which occurs when the airway narrows due to an accumulation of scar tissue, which can happen during intubation when bacteria build up and cause chronic inflammation.
The condition requires invasive surgery, which comes with risks, particularly in a pediatric population. Dr. Goddardi’s lab has investigated modulating the endotracheal microbiome through the use of antimicrobial peptides to destabilize bacterial membranes

and reduce inflammation.
Prior studies by Dr. Goddardi’s lab used in
vitro models to demonstrate that incorporating AMPs into polymer-coated tubes can inhibit bacterial growth and modulate the upper- airway microbiome.
“I am honored to be recognized by Cellular and Molecular Engineering for this exciting and notable award,” Dr. Goddardi said. “We are hopeful that our airway innovation will show similar success in human trials, so
that we can improve outcomes for intubated pediatric patients.” IAH
Dr. Goddardi’s work is aimed at combatting the narrowing of airways in children due to scar tissue.
