Wherever we are, we have many reasons to be thankful

Il mese scorso ho fatto un po’ di riposo
e ritorno a parlarvi di una mia preferita festa che non si celebra in Italia. Parlo della festa che tutti negli Stati Uniti si celebrano ogni novembre “Il giorno di Ringrazuamento.” (Last
month I took a break but I am returning to tell you about a holiday that is not celebrated in Italy. I am speaking of the holiday that in the United States is celebrated each November).
While nonni and mamma always went back to visit family in the United States to celebrate Il Giorno di Ringraziamento, one year Mamma told me che celebriamo le feste in Italia (that we are spending the holidays in Italy). In some ways I was excited about it perché sarà la prima volta che vedo come si potrebbe passare la festa nel mio paese nativo (because it would be my first time seeing how the holiday might be celebrated in my native country).
However, there are some things that I liked about the holidays in the United States. One of those was celebrating Thanksgiving, which we didn’t celebrate in Italy until the year mamma and i miei nonni decided to stay.
I was kind of sorry that there would be no Giorno di Ringraziamento. (Thanksgiving Day) Then I heard mamma and nonna talking about Thanksgiving dinner. I was confused, because Mamma said we were not going to be with the family in the United States this Thanksgiving. Then I heard nonno say that our friends Giovanni and Stefania were going to get together with us on the Sunday after Thanksgiving to help us celebrate “Ringraziamento a Frosinone” (“Thanksgiving in Frosinone”).
I couldn’t wait. I knew it would be fun, but I will miss Thanksgiving morning with everybody sitting around the TV watching Thanksgiving Day parades and Babbo Natale (Santa Claus) arriving to talk to all the children about their Christmas wishes. I would also miss hanging around the dinner table begging to sample the traditional Thanksgiving dishes.
Comunque (in any event), I was excited about this unusual Thanksgiving that was being planned. Ci voleva tempo, ma (It took some doing, but) we found una macelleria (butcher shop) that sold tacchini (turkeys). We stuffed and trussed the turkey and headed to a restaurant nearby in our Fiat Punto where we knew the owner. He agreed to roast the huge bird that would never fit in our little apartment oven!
Then nonno and nonna set out to get the other courses ready. Mirtilli rossi non esistono in Italia (Cranberries don’t exist in Italy), so it’s either winter
squash with sausage risotto or pasta with winter squash and sage as a first course which nonno said added an Italian touch. The traditional turnips, creamed onions, cornbread, and Waldorf salad had to join in, too. Of course, la crostata di zucca ma all’italiana con amaretto, (Italian-style pumpkin pie with a hint of amaretto) topped off our special celebration in Italy!

Covid, Locatelli: ‘le prime vaccinazioni la prossima primavera’

ROMA – Le prime somministrazioni alle persone fragili, alle forze dell’ordine, agli operatori sanitari. ‘L’Italia è uno dei paesi che ha più tamponi, ma sempre una strategia’ “Si sta facendo un grande sforzo internazionale sui vaccini. Realisticamente credo che potremmo far partire le vaccinazioni per le persone fragili, le forze dell’ordine, gli operatori sanitari nei primi mesi della prossima primavera.” Lo ha detto il presidente del Consiglio superiore di sanità e Componente del Cts, Franco Locatelli, in un’intervista a InBlu Radio, il network delle radio cattoliche della Cei.
“Il lavoro di Arcuri sui tamponi è formidabile. Negli ultimi giorni di tamponi molecolari siamo arrivati a oltre 150 mila. E l’ Italia è uno dei Paesi che fa più tamponi al mondo. In questo momento c’è anche la disponibilità dei test rapidi antigenici. Però più che di numeri parlerei di strategie perché diventerebbe una corsa
che andrebbe ad autosostenersi e sposterebbe l’asticella sempre più in alto.” Lo ha affermato il presidente del Consiglio superiore di sanità e Componente del Cts, Franco Locatelli, in un’intervista a InBlu Radio, il network delle radio cattoliche della Cei. “Dire ‘facciamo
più tamponi’ è facile mentre più complesso e articolato il discorso sull’elaborazione di una strategia in termini di sistema Paese per dar corso alla realizzazione di questi tamponi,” ha affermato. “Dobbiamo rendere più efficienti
i percorsi e soprattutto diamo un ruolo importante ai medici di medicina generale,” ha sottolineato Locatelli. “La situazione attuale - ha quindi spiegato - è ben diversa rispetto a quella di marzo dove il carico di patologia che gravava era significativamente maggiore rispetto ad oggi. Basta andare a vedere il numero delle terapie intensive e delle persone che hanno perso la vita. Certamente c’è stata un’accelerazione importante del numero dei contagiati ma ci sono significative differenze.”
