Raffaele Baldini Palladini (1842-1916) an innovative oil & branding entrepreneur. Display tower on right filled w/Bohemian hand cut-glass bottles of “Liquid Gold” traveling world-wide by train to sell & compete.
Carrying on Palladini’s award winning reputation, this Oil Museum won 1st Place in National “Oil Tourism 2023”. Mayor Renato Mariotti, Foundation/Museum Director Dr. Pierluigi Evangelista & Secretary Nicoletta Di Fazio.
Opened in 1880 with techniques used until 1920’s, this Olive Oil producing mill won National and International awards since 1891. Renovated in 2005 by The Fondazione dei Musei Civici di Loreto Aprutino.
With over 400 olive-growing municipalities in Italy, Abruzzo ranks most prestigious and only 3 towns grow a special olive, Loreto-Aprutino, Moscufo and Pianella. They form the ‘golden triangle’. Look for DOP Abruzzo seal (protected designation of origin).
Palladini’s secret, pressing his olives without delay. Olives are sent down the cross-like tower from the floor above. Friend, Francesco Paolo Michetti helped plan the flow of this multi-level factory.
Before 1920’s hydraulic machines, animal traction of ‘blinkered’ donkey’s powered wooden ‘handles’, seen in photo, to press a variety of oil including most valuable, cold pressed and extra virgin.
An underground filtration system, see glass floor panels, after pulverizing millstones by donkey power. It’s said, Palladini built the mill, ‘gothic’ style with hexagonol tower’ for his daughter’s love of fairy tales.
The donkey stables with water troughs on right within arches. Floor is slanted to accommodate washing down animal ‘waste’. Hygiene was forefront on Palladini’s mind.
Before olive delivery, storage, animal powered milling and separating, local women and children climbed ladders with baskets (picture insert) to gather olives. If you’re in Italy this Fall, experience the Olive Harvest.
