LOCAL
UNICO Rehoboth Chapter lays plans for fund-raisers and events
Italian-American Herald
Members of the Rehoboth Area Chapter of UNICO National met midsummer to discuss the past year’s events and lay plans for the coming year.
The first fund-raiser will be a Bocce Tournament held in September at Mulligan’s Pointe in Georgetown, which will provide funds for the annual Brian Piccolo Award Ceremony in November. That event grants gifts to all nominees and $1,000 to a local high school team represented by an athlete of Italian heritage nominated by team members, faculty and coaches. Students
in good academic standing are honored
for their accomplishments and dedication to their school and team. Nominees are
also encouraged to include this award
on applications for higher learning and employment.
The popular Italian Movie Night returns in January 2022, offering Italian cinema, popcorn and home-made pizza.

spring include a Carnevale Evening, a PTSA Challenge and a Lasagna Dinner.
Funds raised from these and other programs are used to support local charities and food banks (organizations in need of funds are encouraged to make a formal request), and national charities such as medical research, scholarship programs and more. IAH

Scuola Marco Polo, an Italian language school for children in the Main Line area of Philadelphia, is accepting enrollment for the next school year, which begins in October.
Since its founding in 2002, Scuola Marco Polo’s mission has been to teach the Italian language to children ages 3 to 11, following a philosophy that children learn best when they experience interactive fun and creativity. About 30 children were enrolled during the last school year.
Classroom activities include dance, singing, games and music, plus cooking methods
and theater techniques such as classic comedy and drama.
The goal is to enrich students’ Italian vocabulary and their ability to express some daily activities in Italian as well as understand simple to complex Italian phrases in the context of specific situations, according to Agnese Abate, school coordinator and president.
Scuola Marco Polo offers Saturday classes, an after-school program, soccer camp and a
summer camp. Outdoor classes are held at Skunk Hollow Park, 600 Darby-Paoli Road, Villanova.
The school has been headquartered at the the History of Italian Immigration Museum, 1834 E. Passyunk Ave. in Philadelphia, but has embarked on a $300,000 fundraising campaign to purchase a home of its own
so it can expand curriculum and offer adult classes. IAH
