A friend we welcomed into our homes, continues to report her news from home. Pat Ciarrocchi celebrates
life & shares her journey with brain surgery “to help or inspire someone else when they find themselves faced with walking a gauntlet they never could have imagined.” In a recent post she shared “I was grateful for Dr. Donald O’Rourke an extraordinary neurosurgeon & my husband David as we carried each other through the uncertainties. Dr. O’Rourke opened my skull to access the right side of my brain.... Isn’t that amazing? And even more amazing, I am grateful for the “grace” of revelation. I learned of this growth before it did me any harm...
I am well. Fully recovered. ToLife, L’Chaim, EViva”

Hank Cisco buddies making
news The Gale Brothers, Italian Americans from Montgomery County are teaming up for the
2022 races, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Gale for Governor and younger brother
Sean for U.S. Senate. Democrat or Republican, it’s time for the younger generations to take an active role
in shaping our government’s future. Today, courage is needed to ‘toss your hat in the ring’ & one always hopes, with the best of intentions.
Honoring legends who left us... Di Modica & Mancuso
With the stock market accessible to younger generations, Italians have a
proud heritage with Wall Street, New York’s ‘Charging Bull’, a major tourist attraction, a symbol of aggressive financial optimism & prosperity.
Created by sculptor Arturo Di Modica, who recently passed away at 80 in his hometown of Vittoria, Sicily, his creation is a story that should
be made into a movie. De Modica, arrived in New York in 1973, stayed for more than 40 years & opened
an art studio in SoHo. According to
a report in La Repubblica with Di Modica, “It was a period of crisis.... he conceived the bull sculpture as
a joke, a provocation.” Reportedly spending $350,000 of his own money to create the 3.5 ton sculpture that came to symbolize the resilience
of the U.S. economy after the 1987 Black Monday Stock Market Crash. With today’s debates about statues coming down... imagine how this sculpture was installed on the night of December 16, 1989. WITHOUT any official permission, DiModica & 40 of his neighborhood buddies, got a crane & a truck, to plant at ‘lighting- swift’ speed, this 11 feet tall by 16 feet long, 7100 pound bronze sculpture in the dead of night. Mission accomplished!
Philip M. Mancuso (84) September 30, 1936 - February 11, 2021, was
an institution in his own right, a master cheese maker, raconteur & water ice wizard with a real passion for singing opera & entertaining his friends, family & customers. A monthly regular at 12 & Wolf with buddies
at Johnnie’s Italian Specialties Restaurant performing concerts just
because they enjoyed singing. Phil was the owner/operator of Lucio Mancuso’s Cheese Shop, a staple on East Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia for over 70 years, opened by his father in 1940. DIY, Do
It Yourself, he took the term to heart
by manufacturing fresh made ricotta
& mozzarella. Of course the shop is loaded with lots of Italian specialties. Phil’s family is from Maida in Provincia di Catanzaro in Calabria.
His wife over 55 years, Edda DeFazio is originally from Reggio Calabria. Their’s is a love story, we hear she’s writing a book. Edda was a teacher in Italy, visiting the United States on a teachers’ trip in 1964 & staying with an aunt for a few months in South Philly when she went to the Cheese Shop & met the young, dashing Phil. Love at first sight, but she had to return to Italy. Phil followed her to Calabria, wed Edda in 1965 & she immigrated to United States by 1966. Phil devoted his whole life to making cheese & keeping his customers & family happy. He will be missed on Passyunk Avenue but the family & traditions continue on.
Movies & Play’s Italian Style
Bravo Greg Lingo, Upper Darby native, Main Line real estate developer, writer & producer of “Last Call”. The movie tells the story of a wealthy real estate developer, played by Jeremy Piven, who grew up in Delco (as did Lingo) but left the area as his success grew. He comes back to town & must decide if he should tear down a favorite neighborhood bar in favor of a much more lucrative real estate venture. Along the way, he encounters all sorts of Delco characters & old friends from the neighborhood. Lingo started writing the movie more than a decade ago. “Last Call” is available now on stream IFC app, YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV.
By day, Natalie Stone announces her new position with Commerce Capital Associates as Vice President of New Business Development. And, in her other life, in addition to a list
of movie credits, Stone will reprise her roll as Gina Scamorza in “La Famiglia” a comedy by Lorraine Ranalli, author of “Gravy Wars, South Philly Foods, Feuds & Attytudes”. Cheryl Stark’s Blue Moon Theater Company announces “La Famiglia” summer performances June 6 & 8 at Autumn Lake Vineyard & Winery in Williamstown, NJ & July 18 at Auburn Road Vineyard & Winery in Pilegrove, NJ. The outdoor shows will be fabulously fun! Tickets $20 on sale May 1 & include pre-show entertainment.

across my country tis of thee. Books used to read and learn Instead of set ablaze to burn. Our heritage for all to share. Little patriots everywhere.
Our nation’s story rich and vast. Our true history taught in class. A special place for all to be.
A place known for its liberty.
Regardless of race, creed, religion, culture or politics, we must learn to understand & respect each other & the history of the United States of America.
