WHILE INDEPENDENT, PRIVATE SCHOOLS have long been defined by their vigorous academic standards and reputation for excellence, they also are celebrated for providing unique educational experiences for a diverse set of needs. The result: customized learning strategies that recognize and incorporate individual learning styles.
At Dutchess Day School, students learn in classrooms full of books and materials with which to explore, discover, and invent.
Teachers understand the needs of children at different stages of development. Multiple reading teachers allow lower school
readers to work at the pace and level of challenge that is right for them. Within the small class sizes, many opportunities for choice engage students’ varying interests
and learning styles; they may choose a topic for writing, a musical instrument to learn, a language to study, or a subject for a science experiment or history project. Students demonstrate what they have learned through presentations, written essays, speeches, debates, drawings, sculptures, reenactments, skits, and musical performances. An in- school activity period presents opportunities to pursue individual interests from robotics to fly fishing to a capella singing to Model UN.
Forman School is a coeducational college preparatory school for grades 9
to 12 and PG, exclusively dedicated to empowering bright students who learn differently. Forman’s expert faculty deliver unparalleled education for academically motivated students with identified learning differences such as dyslexia, executive function difficulties, or attention deficits. Forman develops the whole student, based on their unique learning profile so that every graduate becomes an educated, confident, self-advocate throughout life. Students are guided in learning strategies by specialists who are also coaches, mentors, and dorm parents. With a student-faculty ratio of
4:1, students move outside their comfort zone and explore new ideas in a close-knit community with an active student life program. Forman’s 125-acre campus includes four athletic fields, a gymnasium, rock climbing wall, Science Center, Ingenuity
Lab, Malcolm G. Chace Student Center with a farm-to-table bistro, and a Visual and Performing Arts Center.
Mizzentop Day School, located in the idyllic town of Pawling, NY, is a place where love and respect are not just words; they are the very essence
of the institution.
Mizzentop caters to
students from Pre-K through 8th grade with a nurturing atmosphere where the academics are exciting, engaging, and tailored to
the needs of the individual student in an intimate environment. Creativity and critical thinking are encouraged. Mizzentop’s educational philosophy is grounded in 12 Living Values, which guide both students and educators.
