Westchester Golf Is Bigger and Better Than Ever!
“I’ve not seen this much excitement about participation in golf in the nearly six decades I’ve played the sport.”
Golf stumbled a touch in the confused early months of the COVID pandemic, but it’s come roaring back in the two years since. Quite frankly, I’ve not seen this much excitement about partici- pation in golf in the nearly six decades I’ve played the sport. The game attracted brand new golfers and plenty of returning-after-years golfers, and many of the “regulars” teed it up two or three times a week instead of once or twice a month.
Our courses got crowded; our pros gave more lessons; our golf shops ran short of merchandise, and the game grew like crazy. It’s been great! This issue recognizes one of the fastest-growing seg- ments of the playing public: women who tried golf during the first pandemic season, fell in love with it in the second and are now die-hard golf fanatics. We profile five of them, beginning on page 20.
We join Westchester Country Club in celebrat- ing its centennial this year. The county’s largest club will hold special events throughout the year that highlight its beach club, racquet sports,
dining and drinking options, and, of course, its two world-class golf courses, par-3 course, and astounding practice and learning facilities. Our thanks go to WCC historian Sheilah Enos for her help in preparing our expanded feature, which starts on page 32.
Two Westchester golfers realized lifelong dreams as we went to press. Cameron Young, son of Sleepy Hollow CC Head Professional David Young, earned his card on the PGA Tour. As of this writing, the 24-year-old from Scarborough had finished second twice in 12 starts, a spec- tacular beginning to what promises to be an immensely successful career. Rob Labritz, Director of Golf at GlenArbor GC, played his way onto the PGA Tour Champions this year, achieving a 30-year goal. Rob’s also been a great contributor to our magazine over the years, including this one. You can see his advice on lowering your scores on page 16.
Keep it in the short grass!
