ford, Townsend and Harrington. “Whereas
NS used to provide service on the penin-
sula two or three times a week, we do it
five or six times,” Grunstra said.
The Delmarva Central Railroad has about
50 customers, for whom it moves everything
from stone to propane to fertilizer and agri-
cultural products for making feed.
Most of the customers connect directly
to the rail tracks, but others need to get
their goods to the tracks for loading. For
those customers, Carload Express sets up
so-called “transload” arrangements. “For
that last mile, we’ll load the goods onto a
truck and send them to the customer who’s
not able to be directly served,” Grunstra said.
The railroad provides both so-called
“manifest service,” which is a scheduled
service six days a week, and “unit train
service,” which is a specially chartered train
that only carries cargo back and forth for
a single customer.

“We are very
fortunate
to have them in our area. They are great
partners, including on some of our latest
large projects that have needed rail access.”
In Sussex County, one facility that is
able to connect to the railroad is the Dela-
ware Coastal Business Park, whose tenants
include Atlantis Industries — a manufac-
turer of plastic injection molds — and Great
Outdoor Cottages.
“Anyone located in the park who needs
access to rail, we have the capacity to put in
a rail spur,” said William Pfaff, director of
economic development for Sussex County.
He also noted that Mountaire Farms is plan-
ning a feed mill in the town of Bridgeville,
which “is going to have a spur to bring in all
the grain and supply for their poultry feed.”
Western Sussex County in particular is
well served by rail, he noted, and is a prime
location for any company in need of a rail
connection. «
