have due to Carla’s leadership.” Thanks to his WTC Delaware
membership, Cisse was able to participate in several local and international events, including a trade mission in April that enabled him to close a deal for lab equip- ment with a new connection in Ghana.
Tungsten continues to grow, with Cisse traveling frequently to estab- lish relationships in new markets.
But Delaware is the best place for
his company to be located, he said. “Because of the really business-friendly environment, Delaware is the best state to do business in.”
In addition to WTC Delaware, Cisse has plenty of praise for Delaware’s state government, including the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester and Sen. Chris Coons. “They are all wonderful leaders that we have the joy of working with every day,” Cisse said.
Another valuable resource for prospective importers and exporters is the Delaware Prosperity Partnership
(DPP), Cannon said. DPP’s Global Advisor Michael Marquardt is an experienced international consultant and provides some of his services for free via DPP.
The Delaware Advantage
Last year, Delaware traded $5.2 billion in exports, a 15% increase from the previous five years, said Tony Ceballos, Director of the U.S. Commercial Service in Philadelphia, which also serves Delaware. The U.S. Commercial Service helps prospective exporters gain a foothold abroad through the global network of U.S. embassies and consulates. “Our core competency is international business matchmaking,” Ceballos said. “There are lots of benefits to exporting. Companies that export grow faster, pay higher wages and are less likely to go out of business.”
As for Delaware, “exports are increasing, with the top markets being Canada, Korea, China, Singapore and Japan,” he said. Top exports include
chemicals, transportation equipment, electronic products, appliance compo- nents and machinery.
“A couple of those industries are really increasing rapidly,” Ceballos said. “Electrical equipment, appliances and components have increased over 800% from the previous five years. Those are products such as lighting fixtures and parts, electrical appliances, generators, transformers and devices for storing electric power. Another export that’s increasing is machinery, which is up
40% from the previous five years.” That category includes things like agricultural, construction and mining machinery, HVAC equipment and power transmission equipment. “There is a lot of opportunity for companies manufacturing these types of products,” Ceballos said.
Another Delaware export success story is Wilmington-based Advanced Materials Technology, which produces a chroma- tography device for the separation of solids, liquids and gases, used in biopharma and environmental applications.
