INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT IN DELAWARE

Headquartered in Cambridge, U.K., AstraZeneca was one of the first big international companies to plant its flag in Delaware, announcing in 1999 that it was locating its U.S. headquarters just north of Wilmington. Today, the British- Swedish pharmaceutical giant employs 1,500 people at its administrative offices as well as a packaging supply site
near Newark that dates back to 1971. AstraZeneca, which decided to keep
its headquarters in Delaware in a 2016 strategic review, focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of prescription medicines in oncology and biopharmaceuticals, producing well- known drugs like Symbicort, Nexium and Crestor.
$87 million to buy its longtime offices and set out on a full-scale renovation in preparation for a returning workforce following the pandemic. Growing rapidly through its partnership credit card program, Barclays has become a major economic driver in Delaware’s largest city.

near Newark in 2007. Today, Siemens employs more than 1,300 people in Delaware. It recently announced plans to invest $32 million into an expansion of its campus to open new production lines for its high-tech immunoassay and clinical chemistry analyzer. It’s not the only investment that Siemens, a multinational conglomerate, has made in the First State though. In 2017, its rail division opened its East Coast Locomotive Service Hub near New Castle, where a team of analysts monitor a fleet of Siemens trains on American railways.

In 2021, WuXi STA Pharmaceutical,
a global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Shanghai, announced plans to build a massive seven-
building manufacturing campus
near Middletown. The campus will include manufacturing plants for drug ingredients and final commercial forms, research and development labs, and administrative offices, with a goal of employing nearly 500 people by 2026. A senior WuXi official said the company chose Delaware for its first major U.S. campus due to its East Coast location, available acreage, and access to a workforce with the necessary skills.
If fully realized, future expansion
of its Middletown plans could total
$1 billion in investment and employ upward of 1,200 people.

The Fraunhofer Society, a German research organization that is the biggest organization for applied research
and development services in Europe, opened its Fraunhofer USA Center
for Molecular Biotechnology near the University of Delaware in Newark in 2001. The Delaware Technology Park research center employs nearly 100 people who work on a variety of vaccine- related research projects. Some have looked to use plants to grow proteins in the fight against viruses. The Newark center is actually Fraunhofer’s second investment in Delaware, following a previous center for manufacturing and advanced materials.

The London-based multinational banking giant established its U.S. headquarters along Wilmington’s Riverfront in 2004. Today, Barclays US Consumer Bank employs 1,000 people in Delaware and recently announced plans to hire more than 500 more in the next few years. The bank invested
