“Perhaps scientists have been the most international of all professions in their outlook... Every time you scientists make a major invention, we politicians have to invent a new institution to cope with it—and almost invariably, these days, it must be an international institution.”
— John F. Kennedy*
That science is the “most international of all professions” is as true today as when President John F. Kennedy said that to the Centennial Convocation of The National Academy of Sciences almost 50 years ago. Nowhere is this truer than in Delaware where a community of scientists and engineers from all over the world have come together to develop and deliver products and services used on earth, the moon, and beyond. The diversity of opportunity and talent create a fertile ground
for companies seeking to create new products and services for the world’s markets.
Delaware companies, academic institutions and non-government organizations
have worked tirelessly to ameliorate the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic,
other diseases and the effects of climate change. Many smaller companies have been
at the forefront of developing solutions to these, our most critical challenges. Batta Environmental Associates’ Airocide Purification Technology and Halosil’s Halo Disinfection System are but two examples in the disease prevention and response sector.
Drought, fires, hurricanes and tornadoes have left a wide swath of environmental devastation across the world creating shortages of arable land, food supplies, housing, and potable water. Increasing the world’s food and clean water supply while reducing waste and energy use is paramount to creating a future for our children. Ambassador Nicholas Ella, consul of the Consulate General of Nigeria, said at a recent WTC Delaware event that in many places, children are needed to help their families scare away birds that would eat seeds when they were planted. He praised Arkion Life Sciences for developing an environmentally friendly, nontoxic product that can be applied to seed to deter birds from devouring seed, freeing families to send children to school instead of the fields.
One of COVID’s greatest unintended consequences was the chaos in supply chains caused by port closures and labor shortages in factories, ships and trucks, combined with increased international e-commerce that required additional containers, port storage space and handling facilities. Gulftainer, the Port of Wilmington’s operator, is meeting this challenge. It recently unveiled the completion of a yard densification project with new rubber-tired electric gantries. The cranes allow for faster container loading and stacking, increasing operational efficiency and overall productivity. There are no emissions from these cranes, preventing the release of thousands
of tons of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.
Automation, information, communications, gene editing, optical, and other evolving
technologies create the need for more highly skilled technologists. Innovative local programs such as coding “boot camps” assisted by major corporations and the Discover Bank supported Fintech Building at the University of Delaware STAR Campus are paving the way for entire new populations of IT professional to meet demand. The CRISPR in a Box Educational Kits developed by a partnership between Delaware Technical Community College, the Christiana Care Gene Editing Institute and the private company Rockland Immunochemicals are making this groundbreaking technology available to universities, community colleges and other institutions around the world. The next advance in medical science may be developed by someone trained by this Delaware partnership.
