capital at Moyaone, separated by considerable land distance and water, more so than settle- ments like Secowocomoco. When Captain John Smith explored the Patuxent River he noted that the settlements he encountered were noticeably different from their Potomac River counterparts. The three main settlements Smith identified were Acquintanacksuak, Pawtuxent, and Mattapanient which he described as “inhabit[ing] together, and
not so dispersed as the rest.”37 The Cumberland site, if it is the settlement Smith called Opanient, would have likely been associated with the Paw- tuxent settlement, which was located further up- river on the southeast side of what is now called Battle Creek.
The Pawtuxent village site has not been positively identified but two locations known as the Battle Creek South (18CV23) and Jack Bay
