New Rochelle celebrates 325 years with pride, excitement, and new resolve.
2013isaspecialyearfor0theCityofNewRochelle,ma1rkingthe325thanni3versaryoftheirfounding. “The 325th celebration commemorates not just our history, but the essence of our City’s character,”
noted Anniversary Chairperson Hon. Marianne L. Sussman. “From our native Siwanoy roots and
the French Huguenots of La Rochelle, we honor all of the tides of immigration that followed over the centuries, each group in its turn weaving the fabric that brings the people of New Rochelle together.” During the month of June, the City hosted visitors from La Rochelle, France, including the mayoral delegation and members of L’ Association France États-Unis for a series of commemorative events featuring an art exhibit opening, Gala dinner dance, Kite Day and Mayor’s Cup Regatta on Long
Island Sound, and Fatt Ca

325th Anniversary. Can you elaborate on Q
A. While other communities may have Sister City relationships, New Rochelle has the benefit of “patrimony”—we were settled by the Huguenots from La Rochelle, France,
in 1688, who came to our area seeking religious freedom. Since then, New Rochelle
has welcomed the tides of immigration that followed through the centuries and today we celebrate the vibrant and diverse community we have become. Our anniversary has created a wonderful opportunity for special events this past spring and summer, many
of which have attracted our neighboring communities, including a Gala Dinner Dance, Kite Day and Mayor’s Cup Regatta on Long Island Sound, a tremendously successful
Restaurant Week, and New Rochelle Jazz Festival, which featured a musician from La Rochelle. This fall we will host our first ever Street Fair on Main Street, followed by our annual ArtsFest, Thanksgiving Parade, and a Homecoming Showcase lauding the famous talent New Rochelle has produced. We hope that many of these events will continue on an annual basis.
