The City’s Best-Kept Secrets
➤ Rye has many historic sites dating back to Revolutionary times—and earlier. The Jay Heritage Center (jaycenter.org) was the childhood home of John Jay, New York’s home-born founding father and first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. It is a National Historic Landmark, which is a much more selective list
than the National Registry of Historic Places, and is adjacent to the Marshlands Conservancy.
➤ Right next to the city green is the Square House (1 Purchase St), a former inn and tavern built around 1680 that was visited twice by George Washington. It is now a museum and offers both self- driven and occasional guided tours.
➤ The oldest residential property in Westchester is also located in Rye. The Knapp House (265 Rye Beach Ave) was built between 1667 and 1680, and cur- rently hosts art and historical exhibits. It’s also the home of the archives of the Rye Historical Society and the City of Rye.
ATTENTION
Its food will stick to your ribs (and more), but this New Orleans-themed bar and grill
is perfect for when you want comfort food and lots of it. Look for great meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Its whole menu is available for takeout. Kick off your shoes, crack a beer, and tuck in.

Crisfield’s Meat Market
One of the best butchers in Westchester, it also sells wonderful deli sandwiches, salads, and sides to take home. If you’re feeling motivated, get some pre-prepped meat and chuck it on the grill; if you’re not, simply grab a wedge and salad and dig in when you’re through the door. 61 Purchase St (914) 967-0152
Others You Might Consider:
Ruby’s Oyster Bar & Bistro
Featuring healthy, delectable, and raw offer- ings, this oyster bar located in the heart of downtown Rye has something for everyone. 45 Purchase St (914) 921-4166 rubysoysterbar.com
Where to Play Hooky
Though it suffered damage from Superstorm Sandy and its future is in flux, Playland will open on May 11 and is still the best place to take a spin on some historic rides. Or you can enjoy the sunshine in one of Rye’s own nature preserves. At the Marshlands Conservancy (marshlandsconservancy.com), you can explore and relax while traversing 151 acres
of wild land. This County-operated preserve has five distinct habitats including salt marsh, meadow, and shore. Its trails are open from dawn until dusk, so you have plenty of time to look around—or take that much-needed nap. For a more tame natural environment, consid- er visiting the Rye Nature Center (ryenature center.org).
