“RE-THINKING
     BLUEPRINT BUZZ
IS HELPING TO FILL
THOSE BUILDINGS...
AND MORE!
2012 was a good year for Westchester as the
BLUEPRINT for Westchester continued to
stimulate across-the-board economic activity
throughout the county, as it pushed for the re-
purposing of commercial property, SEQR reform, and better housing options for young professionals.
On Westchester’s commercial real estate front, leasing activity was up 9% from 2011, as 1.5 million square feet was leased, with only 21,600 square feet of negative absorption versus 1.6 million square feet leased in 2011, with 600,000 square feet of negative absorption. “This is an indicator of growing economic health—some of the best news in ten years,” notes Marissa Brett, director of Economic Development for the Westchester County Association. (“Absorption” refers to the amount of space that becomes occupied in the market. Positive absorption shows an increase in market demand; negative absorption indicates falling market demand.)
“The BLUEPRINT is moving the needle,” notes Brett. “As we continue our efforts to repurpose our buildings, we will change the inventory picture. The object is to increase market demand so that there will be less inventory available. And once that happens, new inventory will be added, thus pumping revenue into the economy and creating more jobs.”
The BLUEPRINT for Westchester is leading the way! We are creating the envi- ronment in which business and economic development can thrive and prosper.
