Wilmington Blue Rocks
BLUE ROCKS FIREWORKS AT
FRAWLEY STADIUM
Minor league baseball at its finest
on the Wilmington Riverfront.
The promotions team provides a good mix of kid-friendly giveaways (bobbleheads!) and parental nostalgia (“Saved By The Bell” night!). Mascot Rocky Bluewinkle works the crowd while Mr. Celery (yes, Mr. Celery!) dances after home runs, and there
are always fireworks on Fridays.
PARENT TIP: Check Riverfront restaurants for kids-eat-free specials on game nights!
GUNPOWDER TESTING AT
HAGLEY MUSEUM AND LIBRARY
The two giant water turbines that power the machine shops are loud and powerful, but it’s the bang of the gunpowder blast tests inside the Powder Yard that will really wake up the kids on the tour of Hagley.
PARENT TIP: Start the day at Workers’ Hill and the Powder Yard, which have the most hands-on things to do.
INDOOR CHILDREN’S GARDEN AT LONGWOOD GARDENS
Water-spitting turtles. Secret stairways. The kids will leave you behind as they duck in and through this space inside the Conservatory at Longwood.
PARENT TIP: Bring a bottle of water, and maybe even some goldfish crackers, if you plan to walk through the great greenhouse displays after visiting the children’s garden. It can get a little hot and humid in there.
RIVER OTTERS AND MORE AT
DUPONT ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER
At the far end of the Wilmington Riverfront, the DuPont Environmental Education Center overlooks the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge, a 212-acre tidal marsh that is home to many types of birds, beavers, dragonflies, turtles, butterflies and other wildlife.
PARENT TIP: Naturalists lead free animal sighting tours most afternoons, except Mondays.

RED PANDAS AT
BRANDYWINE ZOO
More than 100 animals from around the world (Red pandas! Giant rabbits! Pygmy goats!) call the Brandywine Zoo home, on 12 acres inside the Brandywine Park.
PARENT TIP: Check the website for the times of zookeeper talks, which happen every day in the summer.
