Where are the BES T PLACES to lose yourself in the great outdoors?
We asked the experts and got the scoop on excellent ideas:
PADDLING THE BRANDYWINE RIVER WITH WILDERNESS CANOE TRIPS.
Whether you’re interested
in canoeing, hiking or just tubing along, WCT will help you get in the water and pick you up at the end. The quiet Brandywine is only about 3-feet deep most of the year, and trips are friendly for both pets and children as young as 5 years old. Along the way, canoers get to see a covered bridge, historic mills and
part of the new First State National Historical Park.
BIRDING AT THE ASHTON TRACT’S NEW PLATFORM INSIDE THOUSAND ACRE MARSH.
The state’s largest freshwater wetland now has a two-level viewing platform, the first of several planned along the state’s Bayshore Byway. The first level has space for cameras and spotting scopes. The second provides unobstructed views. Find the entrance off Thorntown Road,
about a half mile west of Route 9.
DITCHING THE GPS ON THE RED CLAY SCENIC BYWAY.
Follow the creek as you cross covered bridges and drive along winding, stone- fenced roads with 19th-century grist mills. You’ll see some of it when you drive to visit the Ashland Nature Center, Mt. Cuba Center or Coverdale Farm . . . but if you don’t get at least a little lost, you’ll miss
a lot.
BIKING THE DELAWARE GREENWAY.
The Northern Delaware Greenway travels 19 miles through the quiet, forested beauty of northern Delaware, on a trail that connects Fox Point State Park, Bellevue State Park, Rockwood Museum & Park, the Rock Manor Golf Course, Alapocas Run State Park and the Brandywine Zoo before ending in downtown Wilmington.
